Islands

The islands of the Ria Formosa, with their wide sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, are among the most iconic attractions in our region and a must-see for visitors at any time of the year. Each island offers a serene atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and enjoying your day to the fullest.

To help you make the most of your visit, we’ve put together some useful information and tips.

How to get there

- Ferry Boat

The ferry trip to Armona takes about 15 minutes.

To get to Culatra it will take around 30 minutes, and 45 minutes to Ilha do Farol.

Ferry boat is the cheapest option.

(You can check the timetable and the pier location)

- Taxi Boat

A faster option with more flexible schedules.

Prices range from €30.00 to €50.00 per trip, depending on the island you choose. All taxis charge the same rates.

The pick-up point is near the ferry pier.

- Boat Tour

If you can't decide which island is the most beautiful and worthy to visit (very likely!) or don't have much time, you can opt for a tour and visit several islands in a single day. There are options to suit every taste.

Near the ferry pier you will find several companies offering daily tours, and you can check the different options available. We recommend some of them in our Activities section.

Armona

Armona Island is the closest island to Olhão and the only one that geographically belongs to the city.

To reach the seafront – a vast and beautiful stretch of sand with crystal-clear water – you will need to walk about 1.5 km. On the seafront, sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent during the bathing season. If you prefer not to walk, you can also enjoy the beach near the pier - not the sea but Ria Fomosa. Both areas are supervised during the bathing season.

This island also offers restaurants, snack bars, and a small market, some of which operate seasonally.

Culatra

Culatra Island perfectly reflects the fishing culture of the region. Home to around 1,000 residents, the island preserves the traditions and customs of fishermen in their purest form.

Being inhabited year-round, the island also has a church and a school. The beach area is extensive and connects with the beach of Farol Island. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent during the bathing season.

Culatra is a go-to destination for fresh fish and seafood, with several restaurants catering to this. You will also find cafés, a small market, bakeries, ice cream shops, and snack bars. Most of them are open throughout the year.

Farol

Farol Island takes its name from Cabo de Santa Maria Lighthouse, which stands out in the landscape and leaves a lasting impression. It is the farthest island from Olhão, but the journey there allows you to enjoy the Ria Formosa and the surrounding natural beauty.

You will find restaurants, coffee shops, beach bars, and a small market, all operating seasonally. During the bathing season, the beach is supervised and sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent.
